Product Description

Hand-crafted in Tokyo at a workshop established in 1590, two years before Shakespeare's first play, and over four centuries before the city we now call Tokyo. Through fourteen generations, this workshop has shaped Japanese folding fans, including the woodblock-print fans of ukiyo-e masters Hokusai, Hiroshige, and Kuniyoshi.

Designed by TABBIA, this 7.5-sun (approximately 22.5 cm / 8.9 in) fan belongs equally to summer afternoons and quiet ceremonies. The ribs are finished in a deep karaki wood tone, and the outer rib carries a discreet TABBIA name engraving in white.

TABBIA's original design, brought to life at a Tokyo workshop that has hand-folded fans across fourteen generations. The Nami Tatewaku wave motif carries an old wish: that the good things in your life keep flowing, one after another, without interruption.

Two traditional Japanese colors — the quiet, blue-green Ao-nibi, and the soft, cream-toned Neri-iro — were chosen and paired with deep karaki-toned ribs. Each fan is shaped, glued, and finished entirely by hand. The pleats settle just so when opened, and gather quietly when closed.

Fewer than one in a thousand Japanese folding fans is finished in this way. This first edition is limited to 60 pieces. Once they are gone, the next series will not be identical.

The Pattern: Nami Tatewaku

Nami Tatewaku is a layered Japanese pattern. Tatewaku — the rising, curving lines once said to depict steam, vapor, or ascending spirit — is overlaid with Seigaiha, the gentle, repeating waves of the inland sea.

Tatewaku has long symbolized rising prosperity and upward fortune. Seigaiha represents peaceful days continuing without end.

Together, they carry a single quiet wish: that the good things in your life keep flowing onward.

Ao-nibi (deep blue-green)

Ao-nibi is a traditional Japanese color — calm and settled, carrying both blue and green undertones.

Not too vivid — its muted, deep tone brings a quietly dignified presence to the hand.

It draws out the Nami Tatewaku pattern with cool clarity, lending the whole fan a quiet, contemplative depth.

Ideal for those who like their everyday composed and crisp.

Neri-iro (soft cream)

Named after the soft tone of raw silk after gentle processing — a traditional Japanese color that is not quite white, but warmer. It pairs naturally with the karaki-toned ribs and adds a refined brightness to the hand. For those who prefer warmth and quiet elegance.

A 35-rib structure ("35 ken")

The inner ribs are constructed in a 35-ken (35-rib) arrangement.

Domestic bamboo for the ribs, washi paper for the face. The greater rib count and the sturdy bamboo give the fan a noticeable, settled weight in the hand.

A hallmark of Kyo-style fans — fine pleats when open, a quiet closing line when shut.

Karaki-toned ribs, quiet name engraving

The ribs are finished in deep karaki tones — a dark wood color that adds quiet weight to both color variants. The TABBIA name is engraved on the outer rib in white. A small mark that comes into view only when looked for.

Sized for the hand: 7.5 sun

At 7.5 sun (about 22.5 cm / 8.9 in), this fan is balanced — neither too large nor too small. It belongs to summer, to formal moments, and to ordinary days. Equally suited to any hand, any age, any gender.

Hand-finished by artisans of a Tokyo workshop, founded 1590

This workshop is one of the oldest in Tokyo — older than the East India Company, older than Tokugawa rule itself. It has shaped folding fans for over four centuries, including the print fans of Hokusai, Hiroshige, and Kuniyoshi.

Each fan in this release was finished by their artisans, by hand, one at a time. Because natural materials are used, small variations in color and texture appear from one piece to the next.
